DEADSTOCK is an all-encompassing project that explores the origins of why we dress the way we do in Johannesburg, South Africa.
This work is the culmination of 3 young creatives Aidan-Jayson Peters (Klein Muis), Khumo Morojele and Jack Markovitz. It stands as a testament to cultural diversity and adaptability within Johannesburg’s inner city. A place that has influenced all 3 men in their own special ways. Focusing on 4 strong groups in Johannesburg.
Here they pay homage to the great city through a sustainable fashion collection, short film and zines.
We start our work with Femme Dolls. Focusing on the fierce and colourful Brooke. Who is the beating heart of one of Johannesburgs liveliest areas, Yeoville.
Brooke served as inspiration and muse for the first two looks of the collection.
An extremely interesting individual she is as loud as she strong.
Our second second group of focus are the men and women around Johannesburg known as reclaimers.
These are some of the strongest individuals around. They do laborious work that requires so much from them.
We were inspired by their never-ending drive and the utilitarian clothing that they work in. Garments whose purpose is to carry many things, hold various tools and protect the reclaimers against the environment of a concrete jungle.
They were muse for look 3 and 4.
Third group we decided to focus on is South African Football Fans. They are flamboyant, passionate and real.
Growing up in-drenched in football culture. This was an easily identifiable group.
They became the muse to two of the most adventurous looks in the collection
The final group we focused on were the taxi drivers of Johannesburg. A notorious group that are known for their take no prisoner attitude on the roads.
Their swagger and determination to complete the mission was more than enough inspiration for us to construct looks that spoke to their nature and identity.
